Friday News Dump For 03/12/10

So I’m thinking about getting a whippet. But my landlord just said I couldn’t have pets. The nerve! (Like I didn’t know already.) Should I just move or what? Keep in mind that I have lived int his apartment for six years and before that Fathead lived here for six years. It’s obviously the best apartment ten feet from an interstate in the WORLD.  Sure, it will never survive even the smallest of earthquakes, it really feels like home. But dogs are pretty funny.

ITEM:  When I was talking about working on a new record, I did not mean the Capitol Records retrospective slated for release in a few months. But yeah, that’s coming. Two new Dandys song? Never before seen photographs?  Full greyscale packaging? What? Want a preview of it?

Wait, I think that might be one of those shirts you get at Urban Outfitters.  Guys, the Capitol logo is a classic.  It’s the greatest logo in all of music.  Yes, even better than that dog staring into an old-timey phonograph.  That dog died 100 years ago, it’s depressing.

ITEM:  Fathead’s on Twitter now.  You can follow him at @fatheaddeboer.  Court still tweets at @courtneyTaylor2, and Lee helms the band Twitter at @TheDandyWarhols. I also just spend like an hour setting up a Beat The World Twitter @BeatTheWorldRec. What’s the deal with this Fail Whale?  Why is he so smug?

(I had the idea today that if Dorothy Parker TWEETED her classic line, “boys don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses”, that 90% of her responses would not only get the joke, but most of those would angrily try to prove her wrong. “Actually I take great offense to this statement. I wear glasses and I sleep with ten different guys a week.” Crumbs.)

ITEM: Short notice notice – DJRescue (ZIA!) has got her thing going at Jinx (232 NW 12) this afternoon, 4-7. I challenge you to stop by, you peoples at Weiden + Kennedy, you peoples at Powells, you people at other places working within a ten block radius.

Well, that’s it. There were a couple of real news items in there, somewhere.

Zia Weekly DJ Gig At Jinx In PDX

For all you party goers who like to get to drinking early and keep it on the cheap, I’ve got a great new weekly
that you’ll dig the most. It kicks off this Friday at Jinx in NW Portland at 4pm. I’ll play some kick ass vinyl while you enjoy the Happy Hour menu and Drink Specials (thanks New Deal Vodka).

Be there or be lame.

Union War

This is what I’ve been obsessively into lately.  This guy is a friend whose band has had us open for them on a couple Frenchy festivals.  This track is so exactly what I love.  It just kills me.

Changes Coming In Digital Media Delivery

Hey, you.  Our digital partner, Topspin Media, is currently rolling out a lot of really cool changes in the way we can bring our music to you.  In order to take advantage of what Topspin now has to offer, and pass those new fun things on to you, all of the old links to buy our digital music are coming down like the Berlin Wall that one time.  But don’t fret, kid.  You will be able to buy direct from us again very soon. Like “before you are ready for it” soon.  Like when your mom goes to the store and you think you have enough time to try one some of her make-up but she comes back early and you look like Liz Taylor in that one Warhol print.  Yes, that fast.

Also, we are taking this opportunity to totally redo our merch store.  We’re working on some big stuff to make for a better online shopping experience. This, too, is coming very soon.

I guess that’s it.  As always, thanks for your support.

CTT: Firefly

Firefly & Serenity

(2002 & 2005)

Firefly: Ok, this show is one of my favorite things ever… but that said, I just wanna warn you that to truly get the epic experience out of it that we all so desperately desire, you’ll have to earn it by patiently cringing through some good size chunks of cheese.

Serenity: Surprisingly, most of this movie comes across like a campy send-up of the show, but once again if you just hang in there…

Pete Int’l Airport On Apple Video

Last summer I got a call from an old friend (Michael Hebb) asking if I’d like to take part in this project that he’d put together called “Songs For Eating And Drinking”  The idea was: get a bunch of musicians, feed them a great meal, ask them to preform a couple of songs and film the whole thing.  The timing was perfect.  Jsun Adams (The Upsidedown, and the singer on all Pete International Airport songs) and I ran through a couple of songs and decided we were ready for our debut.

When we arrived we found out that Apple was filming a special on Chase Jarvis (the photography/film half of the project)  Anyway, we ended up in the thing.  Here it is:

CTT Movie Reviews: Burn After Reading, Iron Giant, Benjamin Button

Burn After Reading

(2008)

Um, good enough.

Iron Giant

(1999)

Within the first ten minutes I was saying “am I crazy or is this my new favorite movie”, and kept on saying it through to the end.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

(2008)

The writers were showing off, the cast and crew were showing off, the dp the editor the director the agents everyone to the point where I guess if you wanna make a movie this profound its gonna take a lot of fuggin show offs.

What You Missed, First Week Of February 2010

So I didn’t think about missing three days of actual work when my MacBook was out sick this week. No, I only really thought about what if the Apple people were to find my cache of Johnny Weir fan fiction. But now it’s Friday, my MacBook is home, and it’s time to catch up on things you have missed.

ITEM: Beat The World has a winner in the Guild Guitar contest, and that winner is Pat, from Huntsville, Alabama. Pat wins the Guild GAD-JF3012, like the one Pete played in the “Dreamt of Yes” video. Ten other winners received digital downloads. Which are great, because the computer plays them for you. Thanks to Guild Guitar, Ryan at Beat The World, and our guitar tech Elliott for all the back and forth.

ITEM: Last night I had a dream that Logan Lynn and I were BEST FRIENDS! It was pretty fun. Coincidentally, did I tell you that Logan has covered the Dandys’ 2003 hit “The Last High”? Say what? Yeah, it’s pretty great. You can buy the single at at loganlynnmusic.com.

ITEM: Courtney has a new review of Educating Rita, as well as a couple more flicks, on his movie review page.

ITEM: From the burying the lede department: Yes. We are recording a new record right now.

Good-bye!

Quarrelsome Prostitutes

I found the text here not quite shocking but definitely surprising.  This was taken a couple years after WWII in Marseilles.

CAPTION:  “IN A PADDY WAGON quarrelsome prostitutes loudly protest against being bundled off to jail. Legal prostitution was abolished in France last year, thus creating an additional enforcement problem for the Marseilles police.”
