A ménage à trois involving a 7 month pregnant drug user, drug deals with 70’s pimps, a soundtrack by Kris Kristoferson and a role for Harry Dean Stanton? Sure.
I heard from Sarah’s friend Jo Ryan that there was a Dandy Warhols bike ride as one of the events for “Pedalpalooza“. It was listed in the paper saying it was going to a tour of the important locations in the history of the band around the city of Portland. Zia and I went and there was a great turn out and we cruised around in a giant mob blasting the Dandys on a boom box that was attached to the tour guides bicycle. We went to the WTTMH studio, to Slabtown, the Rock Dorm, the Oddy, a bar called “Plan B” to watch some Dandy videos, (including ‘Plan A‘ – get it?) to the X-ray Cafe, and some locations around town where some of the Dandy music videos were shot. We finished up at pretty much my favorite bar in town, the Red Fox on Albina for beers. Zia and I tried out a ‘tall’ bike. Pretty scary ! An absolutely perfect night.
Kicking it all off was my B-day Party on June 1st (Fondue and Karaoke From Hell), hangover on my actual b-day and the next day my “B” is for Birthday radio show (during which I was told by the new radio director that they are shutting down the station for several months, boo!) right after my show we flew down to LA and I hustled over to the 3 of Clubs to spin some records.
THEN….. I spent the day with my BFF at the Playboy Mansion sun tanning and taking pics of Hef’s animals (lot’s of birds and monkeys) while our crew and lots of other crews prepared for the big legalize marijuana party. It was kind of a drag trying to stay mostly sober since we didn’t perform until almost the end of the night but it was worth it because the show was really fun and I made sure to get naked in the pool (didn’t quite make it to The Grotto) before they kicked everyone off the property. (Wait, one more thing about that party, Ron Jeremy and I played “When The Saints Go Marching In” on harmonica and then he hit on me.) Then we all got talked into some LA penthouse after party shenanigans that, after about 50-75 people traipsed up and down stair wells and long hallways and such, ended in a hotel room with some kinda good dancy reggae happening. We bailed on that just before the hotel security shut it down and got to the taco place before it closed. Phew!
Ok, next day was our gig at the Glass House in Pomona, it turned out to be a great sounding room, cool crowd and lovely gig. Oh and The Meek who opened for us where cool as hell!
The next morning everyone kinda split up, some flew home some had other plans. I kissed my hubby good bye and set off for a road trip to the dessert with my BFF. We made it in time for a quick visit to Joshua Tree before I had to do an all vintage country set at Pappy & Harriet’s (a roadhouse bar in Pioneer Town (a town built in the 40’s by film makers to make western movies in). The set was cool and so were the patrons.
Next day was my big DJ set at The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs. I played pool side from 3-7pm, it went really well and the ‘ritas were tasty! That was Sunday.
Monday morning my BFF, a couple other friends and I all went for a fun little bike ride around Palm Springs and chillaxed by the pool. My BFF had to drive back to SF so I said good-bye to her and was feeling kinda frustrated that I needed to drive all the way back to Pioneer Town because I had left my ‘puter in the last hotel. Luckily I had Peaches tix (she was playing that night at Pappy & Harriet’s) so it was a good excuse to make me go but after this crazy week I kinda just wanted to veg in the hot tub. Wouldn’t you? Anyway, my friends loaned me their car and I set out on the 45 min drive to Pioneer Town listening to Prince’s soundtrack to Purple Rain . I’m so glad I went! The Peaches show was incredible!!! Plus I got to DJ the funnest dance party ever afterward. I was using my computer (hopefully they will have proper decks next time) and all was swell until some old drunkard tripped and knocked a glass Sambuca all over my computer! Damn, damn, damn!!!! Well it’s broken now and hopefully I can get that turkey to pay for it. Don’t worry, it didn’t stop me from having a great time and hanging with the Peaches crew until 5am.
****** I had to wait until I was fully sober to drive back. Safety 3rd!*********
I woke up on Tuesday in time for some all day breaky a couple dips in the pool and got my stuff crammed in my bag and got my tired ass to the airport. It was one hell of a birth week! I could barely move all day yesterday but am back in action today and so glad I took so many pics.
I’ll be editing a little movie together as soon as a either get my computer fixed or get a new one. So keep an eye out for that.
Zia’s radio show A to Zia this week features the theme “T for Travel” . Tune in today, and every Wednesday, at 1pm Pacific on the W + K Radio site, on your own media player, or below in the embedded thingy.
Even the ham-fisted writing, scoring and sometimes editing can’t stop Robert DeNiro and several other great actors from entertaining you for around 100 minutes of “okay, let’s have another car chase….um, again”.
Last minute, I know, but Zia was having such a great time she forgot to include that she will be DJing in SoCal this weekend. Tonight in Pioneer Town at Pappy & Harriet’s, and Sunday at poolside at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs from 2-7 in the hot hot afternoon. Yep.
Now, I don’t normally (ever) go on the road with the band, but one thing I can tell you about The Dandy Warhols from me knowing them for 200 years is that I’m pretty sure — and mind you, I’m not there to witness what is actually transpiring — but I’m pretty sure that they are having the best time ever this weekend in L.A. Hopefully, when everyone’s hair is dry, we can get a full-ish report when they get home on Monday.
