Our old friends The Wolfmen (Marco Pirroni and Chris Constantinou) have a fantastic single coming out December 5th on Cadiz Music. It’s called “Jackie, Is It My Birthday” and it features Sinéad O’Connor on vocals. (PS: I love this song, Sinéad’s voice gives me the shivers.) This song was mixed by our Courtney Taylor-Taylor and Jacob Portrait, in case you were waffling on picking it up.
Our young friends 1776 have their album out now on Beat The World. You can download that from iTunes HERE. I saw some copies of the CD laying around the office, so I’m sure that you’ll also be able to buy that version soon.
Oh, my old, old friend, my twenty-ten, pull me to your cold cheek again.
I think the big whoop-ti-do over in North Portland on New Years with Brainer and the Upsidedowns and the Sixers was a big success. I didn’t go, I only attend white-tie masquerades now. But my Facebook is flooded with pics of the party, like this one I just stole form Upsidedown Jsun.
Courtney Taylor-Taylor, the leader of this outfit, has a couple of new movie reviews on his page, Pork Chop Hill and Arsenic and Old Lace.
I only saw one movie in theaters over the break, Broken Embraces, and it was great. I now have a free ticket, because the Regal Club Card has to pay off sometime, and I was going to use it to see, Nine, but I guess everyone says it’s terrible, so now I don’t know what to see. (Not Avatar.) Someone let me know if that Clooney flick with the girl from Rocket Science is any good.
SPECIAL NOTE: If you are in Portland this Thursday night, don’t go to some movie show, check out Logan Lynn at Doug Fir. He’s the coolest.
If you’re like me, I’m so sorry. No, if you’re like me you have an affinity for New Years, like one-hundred times stronger than with The Christmas. (Sacrilege.) Because no matter what, I’m always saying to myself “well, that was the worst year ever,” and for once I can just maybe look forward to something not so terrible. And hey, I’m looking forward to people saying “Twenty-ten” – the thought of not having to hear “two-thousand-and-blah” ad infinitum, I’m pretty damned giddy about that. Maybe I will even leave the Gothman Estate, go out and venture into the cloud of irresponsible drunkards one more time in observance of this turning of the decade. Wouldn’t that be something?
Well, if there was any show that would bring out a zombie shut-in, the one cooked up for 31 DEC 09 would be it.
I come to the Oddy today (always a big mistake) and the place is torn up because of some dumb remodeling. Because we live underwater in the Northwest, everything everywhere is damp all the time. That’s great for you skin, but pretty awful for carpets. When we had that flood in the Big Room (!!) it was decided to rip up the carpet in the Grey Room and take care of the water seepage-slash-mold problem there. BORING. Thor is in there right now, hammering something. So you can see where recording would be prohibited just now. The band is rehearsing, though. Right now. “Godless.” The thing I am most displeased about is the coffee today. It is pretty weak.
Snippets:
ITEM. Aren’t you excited about these big Italian Christmas shows? I am! (Not sarcastic!) I will be working during the shows – showing movies with Scotty – but you will need a ticket to get in. For Seattle, go here, and for the PDX shows, go here. I really want to see 1776 on the 13th. I just did the art for their new album and I haven’t even seen them play live yet, that’s how dumb I am.
ITEM. A reminder about the Beat The World Guild Guitar Contest. This contest ends January 5th, so you had better go to the BTW site and sign up. Plus, Elliott told me last night that the guitar being given away is the same model Pete is using in the “I Dreamt Of Yes” video. Trivia!
So the Dandys are at the Clean Air Clear Stars festival Saturday night, but we’re hoping that you’re making your way there, well, right now, because the fun starts Friday night with some supercool bands and other debaucheries. And on Saturday, there is a whole Oregon Trail wagon-load of Beat The World bands playing. Oh yeah, like who, Gothman? Well, our newest band, 1776, will be playing at 1pm, you do not want to miss these kids. At 6pm, our returning champs, The Upisdedown, take the stage, and at 8pm it’s our tour latest tour partners, Sprindrift. Then the Dandys go on at 9pm. Then the world blows up. Then there is Sunday with a bunch more groovy cats.
If you’re in Portland, catch the remaining Beat The World artist Logan Lynn as he plays MFNW tonight, 9pm at East End. Check that out, and check out Logan’s great new record, From Pillar to Post.
Did you skip the opening page of the website? I know I usually do, but we have a couple of tunes for you to listen to this time around, or covers of “Sister Golden Hair” and “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”. Click the banner at the very top of the page to go there. Just look at those Dandys… those dirty hippies.
