Courtney’s Movie Reviews: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, I Love You Man

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

(2009)

Being quite familiar with Gilliam’s progression I feel I can safely say that this visual extravaganza was not made one iota more confusing by the untimely passing of that wonderful Heath Ledger than it otherwise wouldve been.

I Love You Man

(2009)

Did a good job of making me real uncomfortable for an hour and forty-four minutes and I did laugh but only until they’d bring in the toothless indie acoustic rock songs for the Starbucks thirty-something viewers and that, of course, would totally kill my buzz.

CTT Movie Reviews: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Spellbound

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

(2008)

Don’t let the lame-ass “Something-ing Someone” title fool you, this flick is only about twelve lines shy of being the perfect gutbusting break up comedy of all time.

Spellbound

(1945)

This film is awesome, and as per usual with this era, it starts out slow and clunky, but as per usual with Hitchcock, once it gets going it REALLY gets going.

CTT Movie Reviews: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, 5000 Fingers of Dr. T, Fantastic Mr. Fox

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

(1968)

Ian Fleming, Albert Broccoli, Roald Dahl, c’mon, there is no doubt in my mind that this is the most perfect example in its genre but just wait til the version comes out where I edit away the two songs that just don’t live up.

The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T.

(1953)

I guess I can see why Dr. Seuss hated the way this turned out but still it is a must-see and don’t forget to look for things that ended up in The Simpsons.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

(2009)

Oh okay, he really IS the fantastic Mr. Clooney.

CTT Movie Reviews: Burn After Reading, Iron Giant, Benjamin Button

Burn After Reading

(2008)

Um, good enough.

Iron Giant

(1999)

Within the first ten minutes I was saying “am I crazy or is this my new favorite movie”, and kept on saying it through to the end.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

(2008)

The writers were showing off, the cast and crew were showing off, the dp the editor the director the agents everyone to the point where I guess if you wanna make a movie this profound its gonna take a lot of fuggin show offs.

What You Missed, First Week Of February 2010

So I didn’t think about missing three days of actual work when my MacBook was out sick this week. No, I only really thought about what if the Apple people were to find my cache of Johnny Weir fan fiction. But now it’s Friday, my MacBook is home, and it’s time to catch up on things you have missed.

ITEM: Beat The World has a winner in the Guild Guitar contest, and that winner is Pat, from Huntsville, Alabama. Pat wins the Guild GAD-JF3012, like the one Pete played in the “Dreamt of Yes” video. Ten other winners received digital downloads. Which are great, because the computer plays them for you. Thanks to Guild Guitar, Ryan at Beat The World, and our guitar tech Elliott for all the back and forth.

ITEM: Last night I had a dream that Logan Lynn and I were BEST FRIENDS! It was pretty fun. Coincidentally, did I tell you that Logan has covered the Dandys’ 2003 hit “The Last High”? Say what? Yeah, it’s pretty great. You can buy the single at at loganlynnmusic.com.

ITEM: Courtney has a new review of Educating Rita, as well as a couple more flicks, on his movie review page.

ITEM: From the burying the lede department: Yes. We are recording a new record right now.

Good-bye!

First Post Of Twenty-Ten

Oh, my old, old friend, my twenty-ten, pull me to your cold cheek again.

I think the big whoop-ti-do over in North Portland on New Years with Brainer and the Upsidedowns and the Sixers was a big success.  I didn’t go, I only attend white-tie masquerades now.  But my Facebook is flooded with pics of the party, like this one I just stole form Upsidedown Jsun.

A NEW YEAR!

Courtney Taylor-Taylor, the leader of this outfit, has a couple of new movie reviews on his page, Pork Chop Hill and Arsenic and Old Lace.

I only saw one movie in theaters over the break, Broken Embraces, and it was great.  I now have a free ticket, because the Regal Club Card has to pay off sometime, and I was going to use it to see, Nine, but I guess everyone says it’s terrible, so now I don’t know what to see.  (Not Avatar.)  Someone let me know if that Clooney flick with the girl from Rocket Science is any good.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you are in Portland this Thursday night, don’t go to some movie show, check out Logan Lynn at Doug Fir. He’s the coolest.

Later, twenty-tenners.
