I’d never seen an interview with Frank Zappa. I must say its surprising to me that he’s such a cool cat. Having grown up periodically hearing his zany music (and vocal style) I guess I just assumed he was a zany guy.
This is the the most quintessential artist of this sound that I think I’ve ever heard.
I went to see a grumpy Woody Allen play this music in New York with his band and lemme tell ya there weren’t young girls with pageboy haircuts swishing their beaded shorty dresses around pinky nails of white snuff whilst doing the Charleston. Or whatever. It kinda broke my heart.
But on a lighter note:
Just get this guys greatest hits and put it on repeat and random. dress up. have a cheap french champagne party. that’s always a super fun drunk anyway. Boys in tuxedos with your hair slicked back. Wear a monocle.
For years I have wondered what the hell she could be singing about in this song. This chorus is so grand and sweeping that I of course hoped the lyrics and subject matter lived up to the sweeping grandeur of the melody. Well guess what…. holy shit.
Here is the older Edith singing it with English translation:
Here’s a great shot of her in her younger grace and beauty:
This chick sings like the ultimate heavyweight champ of the world. Damn.
This is the image on the cover of “No Less Than Victory” by Jeff Shaara, the book I read last week whilst in the South. Kills me. This was the coolest book on WWII I’ve ever read. This guy manages to avoid the dialogue cliches of the genre but still gets the occaisional macho dramatic scene to really happen. Damn. So good. You really should read this.
I called two different places whose numbers were listed in the paper down here “if you would like to volunteer”.
The first one said they didn’t have anything for me and told me to ask local people if they knew anyone to ask. The second told me that all of the cleanup jobs were paid positions hired by BP and I’d have to apply for one if I wanted to help. Wtf?!!! No wonder there are maybe tens or hundreds of thousands of dying birds/fish/animals etc and maybe tens or dozens of people working to save them.
Anyhoo, they took my info and said if I was interested in helping out around an office they would give me a call. I said “sure, do it”, but its been days and they seem to have blown me off.
Well I finally got back to and finished this book. If you’re into Henry VIII like I am, you should definitely read it.
As I said earlier, the writing style is a bit shotgun in its approach. It’s basically a few hundred pages of anecdotes and assumptions/insights into Henry VII as an old man and Henry VIII as a young one in their respective courts and its a great study in the motives and manipulations that made European empires back in those days as well.
Since this book ends quite abruptly at the introduction of Thomas Wolsey, I suggest that you have ready a book about Henry’s adult years. Perhaps beginning with the end of his first marriage so that you don’t find yourself lying there in bed thinking “damn that ended abruptly”.
This is the kind of writing which I love and there’s a small abundance of it here.
If you like stories about horrible things happening to good people…well then you have problems. Or an amazing sense of humor. I certainly will not be continuing this book but I have flipped thru to see if she lightens up.
Nope.
This book is a Kafka-esque excercise in injustice, a subject I already know plenty about and hopefully will never have to learn much more.
I am so completely blown away by the civil rights movement. This was a small group of young men and women who changed the way the world they lived in would have to think about and deal with them. It’s also about truth and right overcoming lies and meanness and they did it.
