I love my life. Out with the old, in with the new. It’s all good. This too shall pass. Better to regret things you’ve done than things you haven’t. And you can do anything you want until someone tells you not too. Yep, all of that. Oh and, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure and now is all we have.
Jeremy Wilson of the Dharma Bums started The Jeremy Wilson Foundation to assist musicians and artists in medical crisis. He wrote me personally in the hopes that I could reach some people before the end of this year. Not only is this a great organization to donate to but they have a very special offer right now that’s about to expire.
Thanks for reading and any contribution is much appreciated.
Happy New Year,
ZIA MCCABE
From Jeremy Wilson:
This year our 501(c)3 musicians’ health and services organization has taken part in the Willamette Weeks GiveGuide campaign. Monqui presents is our partner in the campaign. Zia’s messing with Texas this weekend. She’ll will be appearing with her country band Brush Prairie tonight (05/02) in Dallas at Sundown at Grenada (free show!). Zia will also be dj’ing Friday at the Texas Theatre in Dallas, Saturday night at The Boiled Owl in Ft Worth, and Sunday night – Cinco de Mayo – in Austin at Cheer up Charlie’s. Yee haw!!
Zia’s buddy Dave from Dave’s Killer Bread has joined this Sunday’s Clean Water Portland Earth Day benefit concert bill with his blues band Dave’s Killer Grandaddies. This is the third of seven in the concert series Zia has organized on behalf of Clean Water Portland to raise money and awareness for the Portland anti-fluoridation campaign. More info on this show HERE.
From the Facebook event page:
Earth Day weekend, what a perfect time for an evening full of spectacular musicians to join together against adding fluoridation chemicals to our precious water supply. We also have an extra special guest to announce. Portland’s very own legendary drug free bread maker, Killer Dave of Dave’s Killer Bread is showing his support this Sunday by rocking the blues.
Come to the Good Foot for the third of seven benefit concerts, to hear great music and protect our water. Together, we can do this!
Early Matinee Sunday show. Doors at 7pm, bands start at 8pm.
Sliding scale $5-20 w/all proceeds going to Clean Water Portland’s effort to keep fluoridation chemicals out of our water supply. The more you give the more cool Clean Water swag you get! Buttons, yard signs, T’s etc!
If you’re in Portland put on a coat this Thursday night (March 7) and head out to the Hollywood Theater for the PDX preview of Jackie Weissman’s film ROCK N ROLL MAMAS. Zia’s in this movie a lot from what I hear! Getcha tickets at powfest.com.
[C17: from Latin gnathōnicus, from Gnathō, such a character in the Eunuchus, Roman comedy by Terence]
Zia won the OnPoint Community Credit Union Celebrity Spelling Bee last night, spelling “gnathonic,” which is such a damn fine word I wonder why I have never used it, such a cartoon villain word. (My dumb computer dictionary thinks it’s spelt wrong. Oh yeah, MacBook Pro, how would YOU spell it?? Oh, no suggestions? I thought so.)
Anyway, the bee brought out such Portland luminaries as Killer Dave, the president of the Blazers, and the new mayor Charlie Hales. This event was to benefit Schoolhouse Supplies, an award-winning nonprofit that supports public education in Portland by giving students and teachers free classroom supplies. Please check out their site, and if you can, please donate.
Pete and Zia geeked out today at their new favorite spot for synth/sequencer/pedal etc. lovers, Control Voltage on N. Mississippi in Portland. If you dig this kind of stuff like we do, you need to stop by and lose a few hours in this place. Or, check out their site, since at least a few million of ya don’t live here yet.
I’m not sure if you are aware of the recent city council decision to fluoridate Bull Run, Portland’s and other surrounding cities main water supply. It was done very sneakily with no debates and only one city council hearing in the middle of the day while most folks are at work. By time this hearing happened, the 5 city council members, after only hearing from pro fluoride speakers, had already decided to vote for fluoridation.
I believe an issue with so much new information and one rife with controversy should be put to a public vote. Knowing it has been voted down the past three times also makes the city council’s behavior quite suspicious.
I’ve decided to volunteer to collect signatures (we need 20,000 valid ones in 30 days, we are already half way through that time, to get a referendum to block the city council decision and get this issue on the ballot where it belongs), organize events that raise money and awareness and last but not least I’m now taking a break from those two things to do some direct donation fund raising.
Yep, I’m asking you to make a contribution. As I’m sure you know, the other side is very well funded and they’ve hired one of the most powerful lobbyists. I’m standing up for democracy and clean water. I’m reaching out to you because I assume you feel the same as I do.
My goal is to raise $1,000 today, I’m over half way there.
Please go to www.cleanwaterportland.org to make your contribution. Every little bit really does help this movement keep moving.
