Another Dandys Bike Ride In Portland

It’s been one hell of a Junuary here in Portland but the weather for the 21st looks promising.  More sun showing than clouds at least.  So let’s get together and travel down The Dandy’s memory lane by bike.  Last year was a total hoot and we’ve made some lasting friendships with some of the folks we met on that ride.  I’m expecting this year’s to be bigger and better!  So get on your bikes and ride!

As posted by the bike ride organizers:

WHAT: Dandy Warhols Bike Ride and Karaoke
WHEN: June 21, 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: Ladd’s Addition Traffic Circle (SE 16th and SE Harrison)

Zia on Same Five Questions

Hey gang, I was featured last week on this cool site The Same Five Questions. Check it out.

One. Which of the seven deadliest sins make for the best art?
I’m not sure but all the great artists are guilty of at least one as none of the great artists ever seem well balanced.

Two. For what are you going to need a little more evidence?
2007

Three. For personal creativity (or productivity), are you better served by contentment or restlessness?
Restlessness for sure.

Four. Likeliest occurrence within your lifetime: true peace, total war, or the arrival of spacemen/spacewomen?

I will spend my life striving for inner peace and hopefully be aware of the moments that I achieve it, I can’t imagine total war and I like to believe spacemen and women have been here for quite some time.

Five. Select/discuss any one of the following options.
Five-a: You lost it as a child and you want it back.

I really do feel like this a lot. I lived in a fairie land of happiness and contentment until I turned 12 and then it slowly started to chip away to be replaced by restlessness and doubt (though I still consider myself happier than the average human, it’s not the same)

Five-b: You are concerned about your food and its origins.
Yes of course, it’s terribly shocking for me to see how many people still just don’t give a damn what they’re eating or where it came from.

Five-c: These are your generation’s greatest successes.
Hmm, I think that’s for the next generation to answer.

Five-d: For you, this is the book, play, recording, painting, poem, scripture or (item X) that made all the difference.
Oh jeeze, Maxfield Parish, Beatles-White Album, Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon, Willie Nelson-All, Rolling Stones-Through the Past Darkly, Exile on Main St., Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Ray Bradbury, Grabriel Garcia Marquez, LSD, Marijuana, Harold and Maude, Easy Rider

Five-e: Do you have a question for me? (What is it?)

Hmm, I can’t think of anything. I hope your satisfied with my answers.

Some Blurbs For April 29, 2010

Sheesh, everything happens at once around here.

We’re adding new shows to our summer tour at a ridiculous pace.  There’s even more on the way. Ever thought about subscribing to the show rss feed?  If your answer was no, think again.

Fathead had a tidy Q and A in today’s Oregonian about his new collection of songs.  He’ll being playing a benefit for MS this Friday night at The Woods on SE Millwuakie in Portland, if you want to check that out.  Zia will be DJing as well.

And a reminder, The Dandys will be performing this next Tuesday at Rock and Rolls Supper Club at The Firehouse in NE Portland.

Uhm. Is that it?

DJ RESCUE @ Rotture (PDX) FEBRUARY 18

It’s been really neat for “Zia & Kirk” to be asked so often to do our country covers set. I didn’t expect it but I LOVE it. We’ve even added several songs to our repertoire because of it. Anyway, this night will be a fun one to catch us and a few other fun bands. Still working on some details like drink specials and stuff, I’ll keep you posted.

BTW: Logan Lynn Listening Party Sunday

Our label mate Logan Lynn is receiving significant ink ‘n pixels about his new record From Pillar to Post so we thought we would throw Logan an old fashioned Dandys-style listening party this Sunday night.  Hell yeah.  And if you’re in Portland  you can come to Logan’s party for freezies. After sufficient digestion of Logan’s awesome new disc, Rescue, the famous DJ who shares the same DNA as Zia because she is Zia, will be spinning tunes on what she calls a turntable, because that’s what DJs do. This party will have food stuff and drink stuff, and probably someone will attempt to take their clothes off.  Then what?  I don’t know, probably something “adult.”  (This party is twenty-one and over, but really if you’re under twenty-one, stop trying to grow up so fast and enjoy being so adorably young.)

Here are the details in the popular un-Gothman-rambling prose version:

LOGAN LYNN LISTENING PARTY
with DJ RESCUE (ZIA MCCABE)
SUNDAY – 11/22/09 – 8PM
JINX (21+)
232 NW 12TH, PEARL DISTRICT – PDX

PS Here is a fun new video from Logan that’s blowing up right now.

Zia at Literary Death Match Tonight

Hey folks, I’m one of the judges at the Literary Death Match tonight.

Not exactly sure what that means but it sounds like a good time.  Arthur Bradford, author of Dog Walker will be one of the contestants,  if you don’t come see him read tonight at least go out and get his books.  He’s pretty awesome.  Maybe I’ll see some of you down there.

For Our Friend Matt Cwiertny

This is a photo of Matt Cwiertny, Brent and I.
Matt was an incredibly sweet person and a huge fan of our music.  I’m so glad that Brent and I had the chance to meet and get to know him a littlebefore he lost his battle with T Cell Lymphoma(TCL).  The last time I saw him was in June, we had dinner in Pomona, CA before our show at the Glass House. He was cheerful, friendly and so brave.  It’s hard to meet someone so cool and know how hard they’re fighting for their life.
He will me missed.  Rest easy Matt, no more suffering for you.

PROFILE: Music the way The Dandy Warhols like it

Zia wanted you to see this profile on ESPN.com

Sound check is over for The Dandy Warhols. The band has dispersed to the grassy courtyard next to the bar where they’ll be playing tonight and Zia McCabe — keyboardist, percussionist and organizational brains for the Dandy Warhols — takes a bag of rough-hewn tobacco out of her purse and rolls a cigarette as her 5-year-old daughter Matilda runs by in pigtails and a black dress. McCabe shakes her head and takes a sip of her beer as she wishes aloud that her daughter will steer clear of the bartenders who work at the venue; she’s heard the women in question cursing violently while discussing their reveling ways and wants Matilda nowhere near them.
